HUMBOLDT — It was another rough outing for the Crest Lancers Tuesday night.

In the opening round of Humboldt’s annual preseason tournament, the Lancers were shut down, 56-30, by Erie.

The loss drops Crest to 0-2.

“We tried to come out and play so good and so hard and then we came out and took nothing but tough shots,” head coach Travis Hermreck said. “There were points, like in the second half, where we actually slowed down had some possessions that were pretty good, but for the majority of the game we struggled”

Crest hung with the Red Devils through the first quarter and trailed 12-9. However, that’s where the closeness ended.

Erie started to heat up, pushing its lead to double-digits. The Red Devils led 33-17 by halftime.

The Red Devils’ hot streak stayed strong in the third quarter. Erie’s lead ballooned to 41-21, midway through the period. By the time the fourth quarter began, Crest trailed 52-22.

“We run a motion-based offense and when you do that, you have to be prepared for some slumps especially early in the season while they’re still figuring stuff out,” Hermreck said. “But I’m hoping that we can get these guys to watch some more film so they keep learning and studying.”

With the running clock rolling through the fourth quarter, Erie let up significantly and emptied its bench. Crest outscored the Red Devils 8-4 throughout the quarter to get to the 56-30 final.

Only three Lancers scored in Tuesday’s game, led by senior Hayden Hermreck who had 14 points, followed by senior Jacob Holloran who had 12. Junior Zach Beckmon ended the day with four.

“We’ve got a lot to work on but we’ll get there,” Hermreck said. “I think we looked better than we did Thursday night and Erie is pretty good and we made them really good. It’s just got to be onward and upward from here.”

Up next, The Lancers will face tournament host Humboldt in the second round on Thursday at around 8:30 p.m.
