HUMBOLDT — Through most of the first half the Lancer girls’ basketball team controlled the game against Erie in the first round of the Emprise Bank Basketball Tournament in Humboldt on Tuesday.
The Lancers never trailed through the first 15 minutes and 58 seconds of the game.
“We just played as a team,” Crest coach Elaine Holloway said. “We play well together and we are all on the same page. Our starting five are excited to play together. In years past, it has been this one (player) is good and this one (player) is good. This year it is going to be a team effort.”
Unfortunately for Crest, there was a second half to the team’s 42-32 loss to Erie and the second half wasn’t nearly as kind to the Lancers as the first half was.
“We have a lot of go-getters,” Holloway said. “We just don’t have a lot of shooters.”
Crest used its seniors to get rolling in the first quarter with Miranda Golden scoring the team’s first four points of the game and Laurel Godderz scoring the final seven of Crest’s 11 first quarter points.
In the second quarter, Laurel’s sister Regan Godderz got involved. The sophomore point guard hit a shot to give her team largest lead of the game at 15-11 midway through the period.
The point guard followed that up by hitting a three pointer after Erie had rallied to tie the gave at 15-15.
The final two baskets of the half belonged to the Red Devils with the final one being a steal and layup by Ashlynn Aikens with just two seconds left before intermission.
The late flurry gave the Red Devils a 19-18 lead at the half and all the momentum coming out of the locker room.
The Erie lead quickly grew to five, but Laurel Godderz sliced it to two on a three-point basket from the top of the key.
The Red Devils answered that shot with a 10-1 run to end the third quarter and begin the fourth and that proved too much for the Lancers to overcome.
Laurel Godderz led the team in scoring for the second-straight game to begin the season. The senior had 13 points.
The key for the Lancers now is finding secondary scorers to contribute.
“We have to find our strengths around her,” Holloway said. “It is all about confidence for the rest of them.”
Golden was the team’s second-leading scorer with nine points.
