HUMBOLDT — Attempting to get a shot off in fewer than .6 seconds is unlikely, but the Crest High boys basketball team doesn’t seem to mind facing the unlikely, the improbable or the downright impossible.
The Lancers proved that Tuesday night when Hunter Frazell knocked down a three-point buzzer beater with .6 seconds on the clock to defeat the Erie Red Devils, 59-57.
Frazell and company probably shouldn’t have even been in position to win the contest. Crest was down by as much as 19 points at the start of the fourth quarter.
Erie dominated the majority of the matchup, never once relinquishing the lead — until the end, of course. Even with just a little more than two minutes left, the Red Devils appeared to have the game in the bag as they led by 13.
But a hot shooting streak combined with two straight travel calls on Erie gave Crest a late push. The Lancers closed the contest on a 19-4 run. But out of those final 19 points by Crest, it was the last three that were most exciting.
With . 6 remaining, the Lancers had to inbound the ball on the Red Devils’ baseline without any timeouts. Frazell found himself an opening in the corner near his own bench and sent up a prayer immediately upon catching the ball.
On the previous play, Frazell, who is a senior, attempted a shot with a little fewer than two seconds left but was blocked out of bounds, which was why Crest had one last chance.
Frazell made it count and gave the Lancers momentum heading into their matchup with tournament host Humboldt on Thursday. Frazell finished the game with 14 points on 5-for-13 shooting, including 3-for-5 from three-point range.
In the girls matchup between Crest and Erie, the Lady Lancers fell, 40-19.Laurel Godderz led the team with 11 points. Makayla Jones had 4 points and Regan Godderz and Jewel Armstrong each had 2 points.
