HUMBOLDT — Crest High’s boys vanquished a week of struggles Friday, utilizing unselfishness on offense and a sterling defensive effort.

The Lancers broke open a tight game with a 21-6 third-quarter run to knock off Uniontown 52-32 in the final round Humboldt’s Emprise Bank Tournament.

The win lifts Crest’s record to 1-3 on the young season.

“I was proud of our effort and our mental effort,” Lancer head coach Travis Hermreck said. “What I was most proud of was our kids stayed relaxed and they played together. We had people passing up shots to get better shots.”

Two key examples were Crest’s Zach Beckmon and Jacob Holloran.

Beckmon torched the Eagles for 10 points in the first half, including a pair of 3-pointers.

“They were over-playing Hayden (Hermreck) and letting Zach go one-on-one,” Travis Hermreck said. “And I like Zach one-on-one.”

Holloran, meanwhile, picked up the baton in the second half. He scored all 11 of his points, including three 3-pointers, in the third and fourth quarters.

And when Hayden Hermreck’s shot started falling, Crest was well on its way to victory.

“Everybody remembers the last win,” Coach Hermreck said. “You don’t want to win the first (tournament game), and then lose 2 and 3. We’ll take every positive we can find, and go from there.

As a team, Crest hit 13 3-pointers. Hayden Hermreck led the way with 17 points, followed by Beckmon with 12 and Holloran with 11.

Luke George scored 12 to lead Uniontown.

OFFENSIVE struggles plagued Crest’s girls against Uniontown. The Lady Lancers scored only three points in the first quarter and two in the third.

The Eagles outscored Crest 13-2 in the third period to take control.

Aubrey Holloran led Crest with eight points, followed by Camryn Strickler with five and Jewel Armstrong with four.

Makenzee Franklin scored 10 and Daniel Howard nine to pace the Eagles.
