HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs broke a 24-game losing streak Thursday night. The Lady Cubs toughed out a 27-23 win against Crest High’s Lady Lancers in the Humboldt preseason tournament.
“Not since a substate semifinal game in 2009 has a Humboldt girls’ team own a game. Our girls were very excited tonight,” said Jeff Wilkerson, Lady Cub head coach.
Crest and Humboldt had a combined win total of two games, both by Crest, last year. Neither team had won this season.
“Our girls worked hard and it was nice to break the streak,” Wilkerson said.
The Lady Lancers led 4-3 after one quarter but the Lady Cubs were able to gain a 9-8 margin by halftime. Each team scored seven points in the third period.
The Lady Cubs outscored the Lady Lancers 11-8 in the final period.  Humboldt improved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the tournament. Crest is 0-3 and 0-2 in tournament play.
The Lady Cubs were 3 of 12 at the free-throw line. The Lady Lancers tossed in 11 of 24 attempts.
Kindahl Young scored nine points and Whitney Strack had seven. Crest was led by Kurston Gilliland with 11 points.
Tournament play concludes tonight as Crest plays Uniontown at 4 o’clock at Humboldt Community Fieldhouse and Humboldt takes on Erie at 7 o’clock.
