Tuesday night kicked off the high school volleyball season for Crest, Marmaton Valley, Yates Center, Humboldt and Southern Coffey County.

CREST

The Lady Lancers went 2-1 on Tuesday evening in Madison, with the wins coming against Madison and Marmaton Valley, and the solo loss at the hands of Hartford. Senior Rylee Beckmon lead with 28 digs and a 92% serve/ receive passing rate. Senior Ridley Scott led in assists, while freshman McKenna Hammond accounted for six ace serves and 12 kills. Head coach Abigail Hermreck had high praise for the Lady Lancers’ communication and hustle throughout the evening.

YATES CENTER

The Lady Cats started the season strong with wins over West Elk and Fredonia. Kari King applauded her libero, Stephenie Righini, who made diving plays on the floor and led the Cats with her scrappy play throughout both games. The Lady Cats are hoping to carry this momentum on to Saturday’s pre-season tournament in Jayhawk-Linn.

HUMBOLDT

With a trip east to Pittsburg, the Lady Cubs started their 2019 season 1-1. The Lady Cubs fell against Colgan in two sets, with head coach Terry Meadows emphasizing his side needed to play more in the system. The Lady Cubs did just that against Jayhawk-Linn with set victories of 25-18 and 25-20. Leading Humboldt on the offensive end were Alayna Johnson and Jailynn Goforth with six kills a piece. Alayna’s twin sister, Emma, stood firm in defense with 18 digs over the course of the evening.

SCC

The Titans dropped their season opener against Eureka, dropping both sets by scores of 17-25 and 20-25. Head coach Jeff True mentioned youth runs throughout the squad at the beginning of the season, but SCC hopes they can learn from this loss before next time out on the hardwood.

MARMATON VALLEY

After dropping their first two games to Crest and Madison, the Lady Cats rebounded against Hartford. Bailey Griffith led with five kills and two blocks, and Kayla Ard recorded four kills to go along with a block.
