HUMBOLDT Humboldt was host for four Allen County area volleyball teams to showcase their talents in an eight-team tournament. Humboldt, Marmaton Valley, Crest and Yates Center all took to the hardwoods, with YC placing third for the best performance of the four local teams.
Here is how each team fared:
Humboldt
The Lady Cubs went 2-2 on the day, earning wins against Remington and Crest in two sets each. The Lady Cubs dropped a closely contested match to Yates Center by scores of 16-25, 25-20, and 22-25. Alana Johson led the way for Humboldt with 29 assists. Emma Johnson accumulated 19 digs. Jessica Myers starred in attack with 20 kills, and Jada Dangerfield chipped in 11 kills.
We let the Yates Center game slip away from us, head coach Terry Meadows said. We let a couple points bring us down and could not recover. Overall, I was pleased with our ability to stay in rallies longer, and with our back-row defense.
Marmaton Valley
Like Humboldt, the Wildcats were unable to break out of pool play with their 2-2 finish. The Wildcats earned wins over Central Heights and Altoona in two sets each. Marmaton Valley was unable to serve consistently. The Wildcats posted a team serving rate of less than 75%. Head coach Terra Kegler said minus the poor serving the Wildcats performed well. Bailey Griffith led the Wildcats offensively with 20 kills, and her 10 blocks led Marmaton Valleys defensive efforts. Kayla Ard chipped in nine kills along with five blocks. Her sister, Aly Ard, provided 31 points.
Yates Center
The Lady Cats went 3-1 in pool play, with wins coming against Crest, Humboldt, and Remington. The solo loss in pool play was in their first match versus Waverly in three sets by scores of 25-19, 19-25, and 14-25. The Lady Cats lost in the semifinals against Colgan in two sets, but rebounded to earn bronze with a two-set victory over Pleasanton. So far, the Lady Cats are 13-6 on the season, and a 3-1 record in the Three Rivers League. Taylor Jacobs has been superb for YC. Through this point in the season, Jacobs has tallied 31 aces, 133 kills, 30 blocks, and 123 digs. Madelynn Collins has complimented Jacobs efforts with 10 aces, 76 kills, and 108 digs.
Crest
Saturday was a tough one for the Lady Lancers, who are looking to regroup with the loss of libero Rylee Beckmon. The Lady Lancers were unable to scrape together a victory, going 0-4 in the Humboldt tournament. The positives for Crest were McKenna Hammond and Aubree Holloran earning eight kills apiece. Holloran also led with four aces, Haylee Beckmon and Lindsey Godderz combined for 43/47 behind the line for a 93% serve rate.
