HUMBOLDT —  A cold shooting night coupled with turnovers made it particularly hard for Humboldt High’s boys to make much of a dent on the scoreboard Friday evening.
The Cubs could muster only two points in the first quarter and 11 through the first three periods.
By the time Humboldt’s offense started to click, visiting Erie High already held a 28-point lead and coasted to a 49-30 win.
The loss, coming in the third and final round of Humboldt’s preseason tournament, drops the Cubs’ record to 0-4 on the season.
“Our effort was good, but we had way too many turnovers,” Cub head coach David Taylor said. “You’re just setting yourself up to not be successful if you turn it over that many times.”
Both teams were struggling at the start. Humboldt only scored a single field goal, but still trailed just by 2 at 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Erie began to find its stride in the second quarter, and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by the Red Devils’ Keaton Page turned an 18-9 lead into a 12-point advantage at the half.
The Tornadoes sealed the win with a 17-2 run that spanned the third quarter to lead 39-11.
Blake Crawford scored eight points to pace Humboldt, while Hunter Murrow had seven rebounds and three assists. Derrik McCall and Seth Nickell each had two steals.
Rowdy Kyser, Justin Hartzell and Keith Marquardt each had eight points to lead Erie.
Humboldt resumes play next Friday at Burlington.
