We owe so much to the brave men and women of 1776. They had more backbone than the weak-kneed “Trumplicans” we have in Congress today.
Back then, some wanted to stay loyal to England and the crown, mostly due to fear of the King and his soldiers, not out of respect. British soldiers were cruel. They were like our ICE enforcement today; they could do as they pleased.
After British massacres and the Boston Tea Party, our leaders met in Philadelphia to declare our independence from England in 1776. In so doing, they put their lives, fortunes, and families in real danger.
Our leaders wrote our Constitution to set up three branches of government: the judicial, executive, and legislative branches. They placed a heavy emphasis on the separation of powers to make sure no one exceeded their governing power.
After serving one term as president, George Washington probably could have been elected again. But he decided to retire from office for two reasons. First, he wanted to get back to his farm and family. And second, he didn’t want the president to be like a king. He was afraid of someone, or some political party, getting in charge and violating the separation of powers.
As far as I’m concerned, this sounds like Donald J. Trump and the MAGA movement.
Here we are today, getting ready to celebrate 250 years as a country. I believe it is an appropriate time to reflect on the past and for all of us to decide what kind of country we want to be.
Right now, we have a Supreme Court that is a disgrace to the Constitution.
The U.S. Congress, controlled by “Trumplicans,” have knelt down to President Trump.
It seems as if Trump is the king of a divided country. The acting Attorney General is not the attorney of the people, acting instead as if he were Trump’s personal lawyer. The Justice Department is not serving the people, but seeking out Trump’s vengeance.
I truly believe if our brave forefathers could see what’s going on in this country today, they would be alarmed. Let’s not forget about the detention facilities holding a lot of people, including pregnant women and young children, with no legal protection.
Is this the country you want? It’s not the country I want. More states should get rid of closed primaries and have open ones. That would help protect Congress from being threatened by people like Trump.
Do away with the Electoral College in presidential elections. Bring back the popular vote. Remember Jan. 6, 2021. Thank God Pence ratified the vote count.
We better brace ourselves, for I believe Trump will do everything he can to change results in the midterms if they don’t go the way he wants.
It comes down to this: Do we want a government like the one our forefathers set up for us in 1776, or do we want one like we have today?
I have faith. I believe in my heart, soul, and mind most Americans have had it with what’s going on now. I believe there will be a lot of “Trumplicans” voted out of office. If that happens, hopefully we can get back on the right track. It won’t be easy, and it will take many years to repair what this administration has destroyed.
