SHAWNEE The Big Train 14U Allen County-based traveling baseball team competed in the Alex Gordon Classic in Shawnee two weekends ago. The tournament raises money for Royals outfielder Alex Gordons charity and the MLB star spoke at the event before the tournament started on Saturday.
There were 18 total teams in The Big Trains division from multiple states and when it was all said and done, the local team took second overall with a 4-1 record.
They started on Saturday with a 9-6 win over the Topeka Stealth and a 9-5 win over Prodigy Baseball Academy.
They opened bracket play on Sunday as the three seed and started things off with another win over Prodigy, this time by a 12-4 margin.
In the semifinals, the Big Train took on the South Central Gassers out of Wichita and won 10-6. They moved on to the finals where they ran up against the Olathe Vipers which are currently the top-ranked team in Class AA.
The Big Train fell to the Vipers 15-2, leaving them with second.
The team used seven different pitchers in the tournament on their way to the silver finish.
The Big Train competed in the May Slugfest last weekend at the 3 and 2 Baseball Complex in Kansas City.
