Developing shooting skills with bows and arrows and guns and the sport’s growth are behind a youth shoot April 21 sponsored by the local National Wild Turkey Federation chapter.

The Kansas First Upland Pioneers Chapter was the first NWTF upland gamebird chapter established in 2010.

“We want to encourage boys and girls to be involved in the sport of hunting,” said Neil Crane, member of the local organization. “This youth shoot is a fun day of shooting activities.”

The youth shoot starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Craig Abbot farm northeast of Iola. It is for boys and girls 17 and younger with adult supervision required.

There is a $10, fee which includes lunch and a membership in the NWTF Jakes, a youth-oriented organization. Youngsters will receive a Jakes membership card,  Jakes magazine and a NWTF gift.

Each participant will have a chance to earn a free gun at the shoot.

There will be shooting activities with BB guns, archery, rimfire and shotgun sports.

Lunch is at noon followed by  demonstrations on a safety harness and by a gun dog.
