Youth basketball camps offered by IHS coaches

Iola High’s basketball coaches are reaching out to the younger players in the area. There will be basketball skills camps at the end of this month.

The Iola coaches said they want to encourage all Iola youngsters to take part but also any boy or girl in the Iola area who wants to learn the basics of basketball are encouraged to come to the camps.

Iola High girls’ head basketball coach Becky Carlson and boys’ head basketball coach Bill Peeper are holding a youth basketball camp May 29-June 1. There are three age divisions.

“We want to teach the fundamentals of basketball and help the kids develop basketball skills,” Carlson said.

Boys and girls in the first through second grades will be at Iola High School 9-10:30 a.m. each day.  Following that session, The third through sixth grade boys will be at the Iola High gym and the third through sixth grade girls are at the Iola Middle School gym from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Under the direction of Carlson and Peeper, the youngsters will get instruction of fundamental basketball skills. Members of the IHS Fillies’ and Mustang basketball teams will help with the camp. There will be contests and scrimmage games.

Camp cost is $20 per person. If there is more than one family member participating there is a family rate of $35. Fees include a camp T-shirt.

Registration deadline is Monday.

Summer basketball for high school students, under the direction of Carlson, will be each Friday in June through July 13. This program is open to any high school girl or boy in the area.

 The program is $15 per participant and the program is open to girls and boys in grades 9-12.  The program is 9-11 a.m. on June 8, 15, 22 and 29 plus July 6, 13 at the IHS gym.
