YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s girls fell behind early and never could make up that deficit Tuesday in a home loss to Fredonia High.
Yates Center got within 10 points of the visiting Yellowjackets in the second half, “but we had to be more aggressive offensively,” head coach Abbie Collins said.
Fredonia was able to extend its lead at the free throw line and roll to a 59-35 win.
The loss drops Yates Center to 5-11 on the season. The Wildcats will travel to Fredonia Thursday for a makeup game and then to Neodesha on Friday.
Against Fredonia, the Wildcats trailed 15-9 after one period and 28-15 at the half. The Yellowjackets withstood Yates Center’s comeback attempt early in the third quarter before assuming control by the end of the period to lead 37-21.
“They outrebounded and got several second-chance points,” Collins said.
Autumn Douglas led Yates Center with seven points and seven steals. Cherokee Shaffer added eight rebounds and Emily Baker scored six. Four other Wildcats scored five points each.
Shelby Baker’s 13 points paced Fredonia. Kaitlyn Rogers added 11.
