HUMBOLDT-It was tough night all around for Humboldt High’s girls got blown out by Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets on their home court 49-20.
The little offense the Cubs managed to produce in the first period – seven points to the Yellowjacket’s 14 – fizzled in the second period. Fredonia held the Cubs scoreless in the final period of the half and took a 31-7 lead into the break.
Cubs head coach Sherri Nelson said careless ball handling prevented the Cubs from getting many open looks. The shots they did get didn’t go in, she said.
“We went five for 35 from the field. If we make half of those, then it’s a ball game,” Nelson said.
The Cubs showed signs of life in the second half as they outscored the Yellowjackets 9-8 in the third period.
“We did a much better boxing out in the second half,” Nelson said.
But the deficit proved too large to overcome for the Cubs as they lost by 29 points to their Tri-Valley League rivals.
Fredonia’s Shannon Tindle led all players with 14 points. For the Cubs, leading scorers were Breanna Kline with six points and Taylyn Wells with five.
