YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls and boys notched victories in their own 2010 Wildcat Winter Classic Tuesday.
The Yates Center girls (1-1)got more aggressive on the court and edged out West Elk High’s Patriots 38-33.
“We took care of the basketball better and just played more aggressive,” said Lady Cat head coach Abbie Collins.
Autumn Douglas scored 12 points and Cherokee Shafer pulled 14 rebounds for the Wildcats. Sydney Hines scored 11 points for West Elk.
The Wildcat boys (2-0) limited West Elk to a scant six points at halftime, essentially by disrupting the Patriots’ methodical offense.
“We played so hard on defense that we started to wear ourselves out,” Yates Center head coach Jason Weilert said, following the Wildcats’ 43-25 win.
Dalton Smith led the Wildcats with 13 points, followed by Jake Morrison with 11. Ty Roebuck’s nine points led West Elk.
Yates Center also won both the junior varsity contests. The boys won 42-33. Trevor Chism paced the Wildcat JV with 14 points.
The girls took a 36-27 decision led by Blake Crossfield’s nine points.
Yates Center will not know its Friday night’s championship game opponents until Thursday.
