LYNDON — Yates Center High’s Wildcats competed in their second track meet of the season and in a week’s time Friday. Crest High’s Lady Lancers and Lancers opened their 2012 track season Friday at Lyndon High’s Spring Relays.
All four teams had at least one gold medal winner in the 12-team track meet. Yates Center’s girls finished fifth with 50 points and the Lady Lancers were eighth with 32 points. In the boys’ division, the Wildcats scored 33 points for sixth and the Lancers were tied for seventh with 26 points.
Mindi Holloway led the Yates Center girls with a gold medal in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 35.77 seconds. She also took fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 18.82 seconds.
“Mindi ran a great 800. She hung on the leader’s tail and out-sprinted her to the finish,” said Dan Berg, Yates Center High head track coach.
Haley Bedell won the bronze medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 54.62 seconds with teammate Katelyn Hatch in fourth at 55.86 seconds. Rylie Albert placed sixth in the 200-meter dash in 31.09 seconds.
Paige Steinforth finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. Bedell was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 87’3” and Lindsay Francis was fifth in the lone jump with a leap of 12’ 8 1/2”.
Yates Center’s 4×100-meter relay team of Albert, Francis, Steinforth and Holloway captured silver medal in 55.30 seconds. The same foursome earned the bronze medal in the 4×400-meter relay race in 4:48.16.
The Wildcat girls’ 4×800-meter relay team of Marlana Buchanan, Mazie Wilson, Macey Heger and Nikki Akin placed sixth in 13:16.84.
Crest’s Lady Lancers had a gold-medal performance from Kurston Gilliland in the shot put with a toss of 34’10”. Gilliland earned two silver medals in the throwing events.
She was second in the discus with a throw of 88’6”. Gilliland placed second in the javelin at 109’3” with teammate Katrina Strickler in third place with a distance of 95’11”.
The Lancers had two gold medal winners, both in the throwing events. Jayden Bowen claimed first in the discus with a throw of 123’1”. Jordan Morton took the gold in the javelin with a distance of 162’10”.
Bowen was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 40’2 1/12” and Chris Brallier cleared the high jump bar at 5’2” for sixth place.
On the track, Crest’s Rene Rodriguez finished fourth in the 400-meter dash in 56.91 seconds.
Most of the Wildcat boys’ points were scored on the track led by Sam Aguirre. Aguirre was two-for-two in the 110-meter high hurdles for the week. He won the gold medal Friday in 16.09 seconds. Aguirre picked up the silver medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 44.23 seconds.
