Yates Center teams struggle

Yates Center High’s basketball teams will take another run at victory Thursday in the War on 54 Midseason Tournament.

Both the boys and girls teams struggled in their respective openers Tuesday.

The Wildcat girls trailed 17-0 after one quarter of a 57-26 loss to top-seeded Anderson County to open the tournament.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 28-5 by halftime.

Yates Center fared better after intermission. Grace Westerman scored nine and Kinley Morrison six across the third and fourth quarters to lead the Wildcats in scoring.

Caitlyn Foltz poured in 25 to lead the Bulldogs. Kylie Disbrow followed with 11.

With the loss, Yates Center will take on Marmaton Valley, a 34-20 loser to St.  Paul, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Iola High School gymnasium.

IN BOYS play, Cherryvale’s Brock Robinson connected six times from 3-point range as the Chargers cruised to a 62-38 win over Yates Center.

Cherryvale led 33-23 at the break before Robertson drilled five treys as part of a 24-5 Charger run to seal the win.

He wound up with a game-high 27 points. Stetson Schafer added 16.

Emmett Brittain scored 15 and Cash Cummings 14 to lead Yates Center, which now takes on Marmaton Valley at 5 p.m. Thursday at IHS. Marmaton Valley dropped a 64-34 contest to Anderson County.
