YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s football team made it 4-for-4 to start the 2021 football season.

Four games. Four wins.

The Wildcats had little trouble dispatching visiting Oswego, 56-6, to also make it the fourth straight time Yates Center has eclipsed 50 points on the scoreboard.

The Wildcats are 4-0 for the first time since their 1969 team won its first seven games of the year.

More importantly, the victory puts the Wildcats at 1-0 in district play, with another district clash coming Friday at home against winless Cedar Vale-Dexter.

The road promises to get significantly tougher. Yates Center ends the regular season against Sedan, Marmaton Valley and West Elk, three schools with a combined 10-2 record.

CEDAR VALE — Marmaton Valley High improved to 3-1 on the season with a 54-6 rout of Cedar Vale-Dexter. The game was called at halftime, as per Kansas eight-man mercy rules.

Senior running back Quincy Adams rushed for five touchdowns in the victory.

St. Paul 50, Crest 44

ST. PAUL — Missed scoring chances proved costly Friday to Crest High in a 50-44 loss to St. Paul.

The Lancers saw at least three golden opportunities to score come up empty in the contest, including a heart-breaking fumble in the final seconds inside the St. Paul 10.

The fumble capped an astounding sequence of plays that started when Crest’s Ryan Golden gave the Lancers one final chance to tie or take the lead.

Golden punched the ball loose from a St. Paul runner as the Indians were attempting to run out the clock with 50 seconds left.

The Lancers recovered deep in their territory, and promptly marched to midfield with 17 seconds when quarterback Ethan Godderz followed with a deep pass to Golden, who had one St. Paul defender draped over him as he rumbled inside the Indian 10. But another St. Paul defender swooped in and ripped  the ball loose for the fumble.
