SCC got out to an early lead behind Thomas Nickel’s 10 points in the first quarter before they surrendered the lead for the remainder of the game. Emmit George scored five two-pointers and Cash Cummings scored seven points off of a trey and a pair of layups to help secure the lead for the Wildcats.
Yates Center was ahead heading to the second quarter, 25-13.
“Tonight was a team win,” said Yates Center head coach Lane Huffman. “Everyone got involved on both sides of the ball and we played pretty well. This is a game we can build on going into our final week before postseason.”
Yates Center’s defense kicked it up a notch in the second quarter when they held SCC to only nine points, led by AJ DeAnda’s three points on free throws. Garrett Audiss added 10 points for Yates Center in the second to help his Wildcats outscore SCC in the second, 22-9.
Yates Center led SCC at halftime, 47-22.
The Wildcats went on to outscore the Titans in the second half, 27-16. Emmett Brittain knocked down a trio of three’s and Devin Sarchet scored seven points on a pair of layups and a three. Jarrett Birk also chipped in with five points to pace a 20-point plus advantage.
“We have to work on a few things this week to get better,” Huffman said. “I would have loved to see us start the game a little better. We started slow and let SCC get a lead. We have to have intensity from the toss of the ball.”
Hank Newton attempted to bring SCC closer when he dropped seven points in the second half. Newton went for a couple of three’s and a two-point basket. The low scoring offense was not enough for the Titans and they ultimately fell to Yates Center, 72-38.
George led Yates Center’s offense with 18 points, followed by Brittain’s 17 points, Cummings’s 13 points and Audiss’s 11 points. The Wildcats have now won three of their last four games.
