CHEROKEE — Yates Center High’s softball team ended the regular season on a winning note Monday.
The Wildcats, who hadn’t played in two weeks due to weather, were a bit sluggish in their return to action against Southeast, head coach Abbie Collins said.
“But we got the wins and that’s what matters.”
Yates Center improved to 15-3 with wins of 15-4 and 15-10 over the Lancers.
The one-two punch of Hannah Jones and Emma Grogg propelled Yates Center’s offense in the opener. Jones had three singles, a double and two RBIs, while Grogg notched a pair of doubles and drove in four.
Molly Proper chipped in with a double, Allie Chrisman had a single and RBI and Morgan Collins had a single. Lauren McConaghie and Grace Westerman each drove in a run as well.
Collins settled down nicely after some early struggles, but wound up not allowing a single hit. She struck out seven and walked 10 in the victory.
Collins then took over offensively in the nightcap, but she was hardly alone.
Collins drove in four with three hits, including a double. Chrisman doubled twice, singled and drove in two. Grogg cashed out with three singles, while Proper ripped a pair of doubles with two RBIs. Westerman had two singles and two RBIs, and McConaghie had a single and a triple. Avery Eakin had a single and an RBI and Addie Solander had a single.
Proper handled the pitching duties. She struck out two and allowed 11 hits with five walks.
IN BASEBALL action, Yates Center dropped a pair of 11-1 decisions. No other information was available.
