A week and a few days off proved to be exactly what the Yates Center golf team and Humboldt’s Ryan Sellman needed.

A week ago Monday, the 2A State Golf Tournament was suspended due to last week’s onslaught of bad weather. Fast-forward to Wednesday and all parties came out looking pretty good.

The Wildcats finished second overall as a team, 12 strokes behind state champion Salina-Sacred Heart and seven strokes ahead of third-place Jayhawk-Linn.

Last year, Yates Center failed to qualify for state as a team so the jump all the way to second place is quite impressive.

Also finishing near the top was Humboldt senior Ryan Sellman.

Sellman was six holes into the course when play was suspended and he found himself out of the top 10 with a five-over par. But with the meet suspended, the tournament was reset since there wasn’t a way to pick things up exactly where they left off.

A week of waiting and Sellman came away with a third-place finish overall shooting a one-over 72. The senior has qualified for the state tournament all four years of his high school career and after medaling last year with a seventh-place finish at the 3A tournament, he now will have a very nice bronze medal to add to his collection.

Other individual finishes include sophomore Easton Reynolds who led the way for Yates Center finishing eighth after taking third in a playoff for sixth place. Reynolds finished with a six-over 77 after placing 11th at state last year.

Junior Reece Solander took ninth after finishing first in a playoff with a seven-over 78. Solander finished 15th at state last year.

Freshman Jack King took 13th with an eight-over 79 and senior Aaron King tied for 30th with a 20-over 91.

Freshman Addison Solander didn’t factor into the team’s final score but she finished tied for 60th with a 41-over 112.

The Wildcats will lose senior Aaron King to graduation but return the rest of their state squad next year for another shot at the state title.
