CHERRYVALE — Sam Aguirre is a double gold-medalist and Tri-Valley League champion. The Yates Center High junior is a hurdle specialist.
Aguirre won the TVL 110-meter high hurdle title in 15.6 seconds at the 2012 TVL track meet Thursday. Later he posted a winning time of 41.9 seconds in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.
Yates Center High had three league event champions on the girls’ side.
Sophomore Mindi Holloway captured the 800-meter league title. She won the race in 2 minutes, 35.1 seconds.
Freshman Lindsay Francis is the TVL long jump champion. She had a winning leap of 14 feet, 6½ inches.
Holloway and Francis teamed up with junior Paige Steinforth and freshman Rylie Albert to capture the TVL 4×100-meter relay title. The foursome won the race in 54.5 seconds.
“We’re extremely proud of both of our squads from our double-medal winners to those who competed but did not score,” said Dan Berg, YCHS head track coach.
“They’ve all made this season one to remember.”
Those placing in the top three of each event are considered All-TVL. Athletes placing fourth, fifth and sixth receive TVL honorable mention.
For the Wildcat boys, freshman Myles Dice was the silver medalist in the high jump.
Dice and Aguirre combined with sophomore Ceaton Cooper and freshman Bryce Leon to place fourth in the 4×100-meter relay race in 47.3 seconds.
Cooper was fifth in the 400-meter dash in 54.6 seconds. The boys’ 4×400-meter relay team of Leon, Dice, Aguirre and Cooper was fifth in 3:47.
Austin McNett had a personal throw of 125’5” but did not place in the javelin.
In the girls’ division, Steinforth took the silver medal in the high jump. She cleared the bar at 4’8”.
Also collecting a silver medal was freshman Katelyn Hatch. She ran the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 53.7 seconds for second place.
