MOUND CITY — Yates Center High has two Kansas Class 2A Regional track event champions. Yates Center will send six competitors to this weekend’s Kansas High School All-Class Track and Field Championships.
Marmaton Valley High has qualified two boys in three events and Uniontown High has two girls headed to the state meet in Wichita.
Sam Aguirre captured a 2A regional championship in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.69 seconds. The junior also will be back at state in the 110-meter high hurdles. Aguirre placed fourth at the regional in 15.75 seconds.
Sophomore Ceaton Cooper is Yates Center’s other boy headed to the state meet. Cooper placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 53.07 seconds. Marmaton Valley’s Lucas Hamlin was ninth in 56.98 seconds.
Yates Center’s girls won a 2A regional relay championship. Junior Paige Steinforth, sophomore Mindi Holloway and freshmen Rylie Albert and Lindsay Francis combined to win the 4×100-meter relay in 53.35 seconds.
Holloway will be at state competing in the 800-meter run. She was fourth at the regional in 2 minutes, 33.59 seconds. Uniontown’s Jana Wilkinson placed 12th in the race in 2:52.30.
Marmaton Valley senior Zach Louk will return to state in two distance races. Louk was third in the 3200-meter run in 10:49.04 at the regional. He ran fourth in the 1600-meter race in 4:46.50, with teammate Marcus Miller finishing 13th in 5:34.61.
Chase Dudley, Marmaton Valley senior, was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 2 inches.
Uniontown High’s Abby Dixon, a junior, earned the silver medal in the regional girls’ discus with a throw of 93’ 9”. Junior DaNisha Robinson was third in the shot with a toss of 33’6 1/2”.
In the other boys’ events:
Louk was seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:13.34 and Miller was 13th in 2:23. Also from Marmaton Valley, Carlos Gonzales was sixth in the 200-meter dash in 24.51 seconds and Kaleb Stroud was 13th in the shot at 38’1”.
Marmaton Valley’s Jared Kale took 14th in the javelin with a throw of 124 feet, followed by Yates Center’s Austin McNett at 122’7” for 15th and Marmaton Valley’s Trent Johnson 16th at 122’6”. Uniontown’s Zak Hueston was 16th in the discus at 92’9”.
In the boys’ 4×100-meter relay race, Yates Center’s team of Bryce Leon, Myles Dice, Aguirre and Cooper was fifth in 47.48 seconds while Marmaton Valley’s foursome of Hamlin, Dudley, Garrett Booth and Gonzales was seventh in 48.65 seconds.
Marmaton Valley’s 4×400-meter relay team of Hamlin, Gonzales, Zack English and Louk took eighth in 3:53.72.
