YATES CENTER — They can’t all be Picassos.
Yates Center High’s girls slogged through a cold offensive night, scoring only two points in the first quarter and three points in the fourth quarter, while missing 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch.
Nevertheless, the Wildcats emerged with a hard-fought 34-33 win over visiting Oswego.
“It was not a pretty game but the girls never stopped playing and got the win,” Yates Center head coach Abbie Collins said.
It was an inauspicious start for Yates Center, which trailed 14-2 after one quarter. The Wildcats came back to within 24-18 at halftime before clawing all the way back to even the score, 31-31, after three.
Liberty Cavender’s basket and a free throw from Molly Proper was all Yates Center needed down the stretch to emerge with the victory.
Morgan Collins led Yates Center with 11 points on the night, followed by Proper with nine and Cavender with six. Callyn Miller and Addison Solander added four apiece.
YATES CENTER’S boys weren’t as fortunate, falling, 50-44, to the Indians.
Preston Hurst led the Wildcats with 14, Cash Cummings notched 11 and Sean Hurst had seven. Carter Burton was next with five, Blake Audiss scored four, Jayston Rice two and Taven Smoot one.
The Wildcat girls are back in action Thursday to take on Southeast of Cherokee. Both teams will be in action for Senior Night at home Friday against Marmaton Valley.
