CANEY—A cold opening period cost Yates Center High’s Wildcats a road win Friday night against Caney Valley High’s Lady Bullpups. Caney Valley won 61-44.
An abysmal start by Yates Center — the Wildcats were outscored 21-3 in the first period — gave the Bullpups a lead they would never relinquish.
Despite the 18-point whole, the Yates Center girls didn’t let Caney Valley get the win without working for it. The Wildcats battled in the second period, outscoring the Bullpups 16-7.
But the damage was already done, said Abbie Collins, Yates Center head coach.
“We had to play catch up, we played good the rest of the game,” she said. “But it’s kind of hard when you’re down 18-points in the first quarter.”
The Wildcats were outscored 33-25 in the second half.
Leading the Bullpups to the win were Bethany Barlow with a game-high 19 points, nine coming from behind the three-point line, and Kayla Clapp with 15.
Leading scorers for the Wildcats were Bailie Chambers and Emily Baker with 11 and nine points respectively. Chambers secured 11 rebounds in the game.
