YATES CENTER-A cat fight here Friday night was one sided as the Yates Center High girls’ basketball team fell at home to the Wildcats of Burlington High 73-37.
Burlington got out front of Yates Center’s Wildcats early on in the Tri-Valley League matchup, scoring a chunk of its 22 first-period points off of fast breaks.
“They were just faster beating us down the court,” said Abby Collins, head coach for Yates Center. ” We weren’t getting back very good.”
Yates Center trailed 22-8 heading into the second period, and it didn’t get any better. Burlington widened its lead to 35 points by the break.
“They were hitting most of their shots,” Collins said.
It was more of the same in the second half for the Wildcat teams. As Yates Center struggled to keep the opposition in check, Burlington added to its lead. Yates Center was again outscored in the half, this time 24-18.
Three players – Burlington’s Burns and Gilman and Yates Center’s Bailie Chambers – tied for the game high with 14 points.
In junior varsity action, Yates Center beat Burlington 38-33. Leading scorer for the victorious Wildcats was Kendra Leach with eight points.
