Yates Center girls drop road game

FREDONIA — Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls had a tough go of it in Fredonia High Tuesday night.

Fredonia High’s Yellowjackets stung the Wildcats early, 26-10, in the first quarter. The Wildcats made a run but it was not enough.

Fredonia wrapped up a 67-44 win over Yates Center in Tri-Valley League action.

“We didn’t guard well in the first quarter. We couldn’t dig ourselves out of the hole, even with the run we made at them,” said Abbie Collins, Yates Center head coach.

Collins also pointed to 26 turnovers by her Wildcats as a problem in the game. She said 16 of those came in the first half.

The Yellowjackets owned a 42-22 halftime advantage. Yates Center outscored Fredonia 13-11 in the third quarter.

The Yellowjackets turned away any shot at a late run. They held a 14-9 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

Emily Baker paced the Wildcats with 18 points.

Fredonia got 16 points from Danni Shay. Shelbey Baker added 14 points and Shannon Tindle scored 10.

The Wildcats (5-13) host Neodesha on Friday in TVL action. They are 3-9 in league play.
