HUMBOLDT – Being more aggressive with the basketball paid off for Yates Center High’s Wildcat girls Friday night. The reward was a 53-37 Tri-Valley League win over arch-rival Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs.
The two teams battled it out in the first quarter with the Lady Cubs up 12-11 on their home court.
“I’ve been stressing to them to be more aggressvie on offense. We need to take the ball the basket and we did a better job of that tonight,” said Abbie Collins, Yates Center head coach.
Yates Center turned the tables on their hosts in the second period. The Wildcats outscored the Lady Cubs 17-10 for a 28-22 halftime lead.
“In the second half, we came out and really pressured the ball. That got us going,” Collins said.
The Wildcats maintained their lead on a 13-7 run through the third quarter. They continued to hold the Lady Cubs at bay, 12-8, in the final eight minutes of play.
Daryean Estes, the lone senior on the Wildcat team, recorded her first-ever double-double Friday night. Estes scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Emily Baker hit three three-pointers on her way to a game-high 14 points. She also dished out five assists.
Sophomore Sheri Middleton paced the Lady Cubs with 12 points.
The win put the Wildcats at 2-3 in Tri-Valley play and 3-5 overall. The Lady Cubs drop to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the TVL.
Yates Center travels to Waverly for a non-league game Tuesday. Humboldt is idle Tuesday then goes to Cherryvale next Friday.
Yates Center won the junior varsity game 41-11.
