Last week wasn’t just about basketball.

Wrestlers from Iola and Humboldt high schools also competed on multiple events through the weekend.

Iola’s Mustangs were at Columbus Thursday for a double-dual competition against host Columbus and Fort Scott before heading to the Eureka Invitational on Saturday. The Mustang junior varsity wrestlers, on top of wrestling at Columbus, were at Eureka for a separate competition Friday.

Humboldt also competed at Eureka Saturday.

Among the highlights:

Humboldt’s Cole Mathes continues to thrive at 175 pounds. He rolled through to the championship match Saturday in Eureka before bowing out to Mason Abandon of Columbus, one of the top wrestlers in the state.

The Mustangs, meanwhile, were led once again by freshman standout Zoie Hesse in the girls competition. She took fourth at 170 pounds, going 3-2 on the day. Iola’s Korbin Cloud at 144 pounds and Kale Pratt at 150 pounds both went 2-2 in the tournament.

Friday’s JV tournament featured Iola’s Trapper Boren and Tripp Mathes both taking second place and Rohan Springer, Broderick Peters and Franklin Kerr taking third in their respective weight divisions.

Humboldt’s JV wrestlers included Emmitt Carson, who took second in his weight class.
