The Red Devils men’s and women’s soccer teams opened up their conference slate on the road on Tuesday. The men fell 3-1 to Cowley County while the women grabbed a 2-1 win over the Lady Tigers.
Hailey Jones struck early in the women’s game scoring the first goal less than two minutes into the game off of an assist by Maddie Clark.
The game winner came late in the first half as Leigh-Anne Bartlett took her team’s lead to 2-0 with under seven minutes left in the first half on an assist from Hailey Gonzalez.
Freshman keeper Morgan Cossairt went the distance at the goal, nearly getting the shutout as Cowley snuck a goal in during the final minutes of the match. Cossairt recorded four saves.
On the men’s side, Cowley laid it on thick and early jumping out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the half.
“During our halftime talks we had some sophomores step up and take some leadership,” assistant coach Matt Abbott said.
Freshman Daniel Guardado was a force offensively, hitting the first and only goal.
Defensively, Allen allowed just one shot on goal in the second half.
Keeper Alan Ibarra recorded seven saves in the contest.
“I am very proud of our guys for not giving up and fighting until the end of the game,” Abbott said. “It’s not the result we wanted, but at least our guys are working very hard everyday to improve and learn from our mistakes.”
Allen County will head home this weekend and take on Kansas City Community College. The women will play at 2 p.m. and the men will play right after at 4 p.m.
