A strong start helped the Allen Community College women’s basketball team secure a 72-51 win Tuesday against Ottawa JV in the team’s first game since the Christmas break.
The Red Devil women led 27-18 at half, never giving up the lead in the second half.
“The ladies got stops on defense and played team offense by making the extra pass to open shooters,” coach Rachel Janzen said.
Allen shot 40 percent overall — from both the field and beyond the arc. Erika Essmen led the team with 16 points and had four steals. She also shot 4-7 from 3-point land.
Daria Evans followed with 15 points and had two steals on defense. Ashley Washington scored 11 points and dished out three assists. Rachael Bruce vacuumed up nine rebounds and added eight points. Josie Reilly followed Bruce with eight rebounds and had four assists.
The Red Devils play at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in the team’s first conference game of the season at rival Nesosho County.
