LEBO — A 22-point defeat in which his team committed six turnovers still left Southern Coffey County High head coach John Chanley with a sense of optimism.
That’s because the Titans were battling highly regarded Lebo High on the gridiron. An aside from a troublesome second quarter, Southern Coffey County largely stood toe-to-toe with the Wolves.
“We’re finally moving forward as a team,” Chanley said. “You hate that it had to be in week 6, but we are improving.”
But alas, Lebo’s 20 unanswered points in the second quarter put the Wolves out in front in a 42-20 win.
The loss drops Southern Coffey County to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in Eight Man I, District 3 play.
Lebo’s second-quarter outburst erased an early 12-8 Southern Coffey County lead.
“We had the lead, but Lebo made some quick adjustments,” Chanley said. “We were able to make some adjustments at halftime and it was back-and-forth from there.”
Colin Kraft found Aaron Ludolph on a 10-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring midway through the first period. Lebo scored less than two minutes later before the Titans responded with their second touchdown drive of the period. That drive was capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Travis Bryan.
Lebo’s strong second quarter put the Wolves on top 28-12.
Southern Coffey County closed the gap to 28-20 with 9:01 left in the third quarter on a five-yard run by Dylan Wonser and a two-point conversion pass from Kraft to Scott Fischer.
But Lebo responded with a long touchdown run less than minute later to push the lead back to 14, 34-20.
Bryan led the Titans with 99 yards on 24 carries. Wonser rushed 10 times for 21 yards. Kraft completed 13 of 26 passes for 88 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions. Ludolph pulled in seven passes for 74 yards, Bryan had two for 14 and Fischer pulled in two for six. Wes Callahan had 14 tackles and a fumble recovery. Bryan had 13 stops and a fumble recovery, Kraft registered nine stops and Fischer had eight and an interception. Also recovering fumbles were Charlie Patterson and KEWade Seabolt.
Both teams struggled with turnovers. Southern Coffey County lost the ball six times; Lebo five.
Southern Coffey County travels to Burlingame next Friday.
