The ball tips next week on the winter sports scene for all but one of the Iola Register prep sports basketball teams.

Iola High’s Fillies and Mustangs begin the 2019-20 basketball season Friday by traveling to Garnett to take on Anderson County High School. The Central Heights preseason basketball tournament begins Dec. 9.

Iola’s wrestlers will hit the mats for the first time next Saturday at the Caney Invitational.

HUMBOLDT High’s Cub teams will open the season at home Friday against Eureka before hosting the Humboldt Preseason Invitational the following week. Cub wrestlers don’t have to wait as long. They have meets Tuesday at Cherryvale and at home Thursday against Leon-Bluestem before partaking in the Caney Invitational next weekend.

MARMATON VALLEY also gets a heavy dose of home cooking to open the basketball season. The Wildcats will host Uniontown Friday before hosting the Marmaton Valley Preseason Invitational the following week.

CREST and Southern Coffey County will get a one-day jump on their neighboring schools when it comes to basketball. The K-58 rivals will open the season against each other Thursday evening in Le Roy. Crest’s teams then head to the Humboldt Invitational beginning Dec. 9. Southern Coffey County ventures to Melvern for the Marais des Cygnes Valley Invitational.

YATES Center is the only area school idle next weekend on the basketball court. The Wildcats open the season with their own preseason invitational tournament beginning Dec. 9.
