BURLINGTON — Maggie Wilson, Kendra Taiclet and Brae Adams were the golden girls Tuesday at the Burlington High Invitational track meet.
Iola High’s Wilson won the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds. She continued her dominance in the pole vault with a winning effort of 11 feet.
Taiclet, also of Iola High, flew to the finish line to win the 100-meter high hurdles. Later she claimed a second gold medal in the 200-meter dash in 27.3 seconds.
Yates Center High’s Adams continues to be a force in the discus ring. Adams won the gold medal Tuesday with a throw of 109 feet, 1⁄2 inch.
“Kendra and Maggie had excellent meets. They combined to score 54 points for us,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head coach. “Maggie competed but was hurt after playing soccer Saturday.
“We also competed without Kelsey Larson because of a funeral and she had leg soreness from playing basketball over the weekend.”
Olpe won the team title with 110 points, followed by Chanute with 100. Iola scored 72.5 points, just in front of Fredonia at 72. There were 19 schools competing.
Iola’s 4×100-meter relay team of Wilson, Chanel Coyne, Breanna Stout and Taiclet finished second in 53.3 seconds. Taiclet took the fifth-place medal in the 300-meter low hurdles in 50.8 seconds.
Molly Maxwell was fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 18.2 seconds. Yates Center’s Mindi Holloway hit the first hurdle, fell down but got up and finished eighth in 21.4 seconds.
“Mindi didn’t quit after falling and was able to score points for us by finishing,” said Dan Berg, Yates Center head coach. “Our kids continue to improve and that’s good as we move toward league and regional competitions.”
Paige Steinforth earned a medal, taking fourth in the 400-meter dash for Yates Center. Her time was 1:07.9. Holloway ran a personal best in the 800 meters of 2:48.3 and Macey Heger ran a personal-best time of 7:07 in the 1600 meters.
Smith said Iola’s throwers did not have the day the coaches expected.
Katlyn Cleaver took the fourth-place medal in the discus with a throw of 100’2” and was seventh in the shot put at 32’4”. Kirstin McGuffin was the fifth-place medalist in the javelin at 100’8”.
Stout placed fifth for a medal in the pole vault at 7 feet. Maxwell was sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4’8”.
Iola’s junior varsity competes in Thursday’s Crest High Invitational in Iola. The Fillies’ varsity goes to Chanute Friday.
Yates Center is at Cherryvale Thursday.
