Three Southeast Kansas League event championships and two school records set is all Iola High’s Fillies did at home Friday at the 2010 SEK championship track meet.
Junior Maggie Wilson defended her SEK pole vault championship. She went 10 feet, 6 inches to win the gold medal.
First-time SEK champion is junior Kirstin McGuffin. McGuffin followed up her third-place finish in the javelin 2009 with a gold medal Friday.
“I had a lot of confidence going into the meet because I have been throwing against most of these girls all season,” said McGuffin. “My first throw was 114 feet but I knew I had to throw in further.”
Further she did. McGuffin won the javelin with a throw of 116 feet, 2 inches. She said that came on her last throw of the finals.
“It’s awesome to be an SEK champion,” she said. “I’m looking forward to competing at home again for regional.”
Wilson combined with sophomores Kendra Taiclet and Kelsey Larson and senior Jazmyne Honeycutt to claim the SEK 4×100-meter relay championship. But that’s not all.
The foursome’s winning time of 51.2 seconds was a new Iola High Fillies’ 4×100 record. The old record was 51.5 seconds set by Wilson, Taiclet, Brittney Jacobs and Honeycutt in 2009.
“Wow, our girls scored 100 points Friday and finished third. That’s great,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach. “We had school records and a lot of personal best performances.”
Taiclet didn’t win the 300-meter low hurdles but she did set a school record. Taiclet was fourth in the race Friday at 50.0 seconds.
The old IHS mark was 50.1 by Nicole Campbell in 1999.
Taiclet placed fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.72 seconds. Ty Ellis was sixth at 19.76.
Wilson was the silver medalist in the 100-meter dash in 13.88 seconds. Honeycutt took the bronze at 14.01.
Larson placed second in the 200-meter dash in 2770 seconds. Honeycutt, who had one the SEK 200 in 2009, finished fourth in 29.09.
Larson ran a personal-best time of 61.4 seconds in the 400-meter dash to take second. It was almost a photo finish with Lauren Thompson of Coffeyville winning in 61.5 and Ashley Lewandowski of Pittsburg in third at 61.91.
“I’m happy to repeat as league champion but disappointed that I didn’t go higher,” Wilson said following the pole vault competition.
Smith said he was excited that freshman Breanna Stout finished fourth in the pole vault. She went over at eight feet, a personal-best height.
Mindy Powelson, a senior, placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 110’2”. Ellis was eighth at 95’3”.
Katlyn Cleaver took the silver medal in the discus with a toss of 107’10”. McGuffin was sixth at 90’9”.
Iola’s 4×800-meter relay team of Sydney Owens, Abby Works, Stout and Chanel Coyne took fourth. Their time was 12 minutes, 10.22 seconds.
Taiclet, Larson, Coyne and Stout ran the 4×400-meter relay race in 4:23.46.
Celeste Ambrose was sixth in the high jump at 4’2” and Cleaver took sixth in the shot put at 31’1/2”.
Iola had six girls earn All-SEK honors after finishing in the top three of their events.
