LEONARDVILLE — They played it better a couple of weeks but Yates Center High’s Wildcats still had a successful golf tournament. Monday.
The Wildcats captured the Kansas Sand Greens Regional Championship on the Leonardville Golf Course. That means the whole team qualifies for the state golf tournament next week.
Jake Morrison, a junior, is the individual regional champion. He shot a 75 for the 18-hole tournament. Teammate Paul Stockebrand, another junior, was second medalist with a 78.
Sophomore Dylan Bauman carded a 91 and claimed the sixth-place medal. Another Wildcat, sophomore Blake Francis, shot a 104, tying for ninth but lost the playoff. He took the 10th-place medal.
Freshmen Tanner Sheldon and Mason Hartwig shot 139 and 141, respectively.
“It’s great the boys won the regional championship but we had a lower team total earlier in the season on the same course,” said Kevin Barnes, Wildcat head coach.
“It’s going to take everyone playing the best games of the year next week at state.”
The Kansas Sand Greens State Tournament is next Monday in Luray.
The Wildcats had been sand greens regional runner-up four times — 1981, 1982, 2003 and 2009. The juniors and sophomores played in last year’s state tournament.
