HOWARD — Yates Center High ended a couple of noteworthy streaks in 2013.
The Wildcats were rewarded with one of the strongest teams in the state to open the Kansas Eight Man, Division I playoffs tonight.
Yates Center (6-3) will travel to undefeated West Elk (9-0) at 7 o’clock tonight.
West Elk defated the Wildcats, 52-6, in week 2.
Regardless of tonight’s outcome, this season has been noteworthy for Yates Center in two aspects.
The Wildcats snapped a 23-game losing streak by winning its season opener, 48-22, over Sedan, and a 23-year playoff drought by downing Uniontown, 38-36, in its regular season finale.
Yates Center is keyed by quarterback Caleb DeNoon, running back Austin McNett and receiver Robert Arnold.
Season statistics were unavailable for the Wildcats.
A trio of standouts lead the way for the Patriots. Running back Armando Gomez has rushed for 1,338 yards in his sophomore campaign with 25 toucdhowns. Meanwhile, senior Paxton Noll has rushed for 489 yards and 17 touchdowns, and hauled in 13 catches for 195 yards an three more scores.
Quarterback Tristen Wilson has thrown for 12 touchdowns, while losing only one interception.
