Marmaton Valley High coach Kent Houk had little trouble reminding his players the fickle nature of playoff football.
The Wildcats need look no further than their 2011 playoff slate, which featured a memorable thriller at home against Udall.
Marmaton Valley emerged 46-45 after Udall scored a potential game-tying touchdown in the waning seconds, only to unsuccessfully attempt a two-point conversion.
While the Eagles lost a number of key contributors — particularly linemen — from last year’s squad, they still have playmakers stout enough to occupy Marmaton Valley’s full attention.
Udall visits Marmaton Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the second year in a row to open the Eight Man, Division I playoffs.
“You have to shut down their passing game to be successful,” Houk said. “They’re also good at running sweeps and using the halfback pass.”
A pair of seniors lead the way for Udall.
Quarterback Michael Propst has thrown for 943 yards and 14 touchdowns through eight games. The 6-4 senior, however, did not play in Udall’s regular season finale, a stunning 34-30 loss to Cedar Vale-Dexter.
Heath Satterlee, meanwhile, is a threat to run or throw from his running back position. He’s run for 765 yards and 11 touchdowns, while throwing for 260 yards.
Saterlee suffered a shoulder injury against Cedar Vale. While his status for Tuesday is unknown, “we’re going to prepare as if he’s playing,” Houk said.
Freshman Alex Perez, meanwhile, has emerged as the Eagles’ leading receiver.
Marmaton Valley hopes to perform in much the same manner it used for a perfect 9-0 regular season, averaging 59 points a game and pitching four shutouts.
Senior running back Cole Becker — and his 200 yards rushing per-game average — continues to lead the way, while running mate Daylen Houk and quarterback Ryan Smith also perform at high levels.
Paving the way for the backs and receivers is the Wildcats’ much-heralded offensive line.
Coach Houk said the Wildcats have done a good job of staying focused as the playoffs begin.
“They know what’s at stake.”
