Wildcats tangle with Vikings

MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s baseball team staged a rally in the second game Monday night to sweep their home doubleheader with Northeast High’s Vikings from Arma.

Marmaton Valley High’s softball team used a seven-run third inning to boost its way to a victory. Doing that  ensured a split of the Three Rivers League doubleheader.

The Wildcat boys notched a 10-1 league win over the Vikings in the opener. Jimmy Frye got the win on the mound, allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out six.

Frye also went 4-for-4 at the plate with two singles and two doubles. Derrick Carr doubled and singled and Cole Becker had two singles.

Daylen Houk and Austin Harrison each had a double. Hitting a single apiece were Sage Hall, Taylor Lhuillier, Gage Stewart, Chris Bowman and Shawn Frye.

“We pitched, fielded and hit the ball well. Jimmy threw a great game and we made plays behind him,” said Derek Scharff, MVHS baseball head coach.

Northeast led 4-0 after four innings in the nightcap. The Wildcats tied the game with four runs in the fifth and got the deciding run in the sixth for a 5-4 win.

Becker started and went four innings, giving up four runs on six hits, two walks and one hit batter. He struck out five. Carr came on in relief to throw three scoreless innings and did not allow a hit. He walked two and struck out three.

“Our bats went cold in the first four innings, then we starting hitting the ball in the fifth. I was glad to see us keep our composure and get this win,” Scharff said.

Carr connected for a double and two singles. Hall and J. Frye each had a single and a double.

Becker doubled. Houk, Harrison and Stewart had a base hit apiece.

The Wildcat boys are 7-6 overall and 4-2 in TRL play.

On the softball diamond, Northeast beat Marmaton Valley 11-7 in the first game Monday. The Lady Vikings built an 11-1 lead through 5 1/2 innings. The Wildcats scored six runs in the final two frames.

“We made mental errors in the first couple of innings and Northeast capitalized on them,” said Brenda Mills, MVHS softball head coach. “The girls never gave up.”

Kaitlin Ensminger took the pitching loss. She was charged with four hits and 11 walks. She had six strikeouts.
