High School Golf: Yates Center

The Yates Center golf team brought a full squad to the Fredonia High School Invitational on Tuesday and came away with a fourth-place finish as a team.

The top-five team finish is especially impressive considering that three of the six golfers competing were playing in the first varsity tournament of their high school careers.

Wyatt Buchanan (127), Jaylan Knight (133) and Taven Smoot (139) each made their varsity debut on Tuesday.

“There were some big butterflies before the tournament, but once they got those jitters under control they played pretty well,” head coach Kevin Barnes said.

The Wildcats were led by their phenomenal freshman Easton Reynolds who for the first time in his high school career didn’t place first in the tournament, breaking a two-tournament win streak.

Reynolds finished the day with 78 which was good for third overall.

Reece Solander finished two places behind Reynolds in fifth by shooting a 79. Tuesday’s tournament was the first time all season that the sophomore broke into the 70s in scoring.

Kaden Petit rounded things out for the Wildcats and in his second varsity tournament ever, he dropped his score by 10 strokes from the first tournament with a 112.

Up next, the Wildcat varsity team will compete at Sedan on April 26.
