MORAN — Marmaton Valley’s softball team has been able to find ways to win all season long and they have stayed above .500 for the entire season.
When it looked as if their winning record was in jeopardy on Monday, the Wildcats offense found a way to make it through.
“We’ve done really well (on offense) and we keep doing really well,” Marmaton Valley coach Kaelyn Colgin said.
After losing the first game of the night 17-7 to Uniontown, the Wildcats record fell to 6-5, placing them in danger of finishing the day without a winning record.
“The first game we struggled,” Colgin said. “They hit them in the gaps and we couldn’t really stop them from scoring, but we did what we could.”
The Wildcat offense was able to lead the team to a 13-12 victory in game two and it was the bottom of the order that provided the biggest shot in the arm for Marmaton Valley.
Makayla and Shayla Brooks batted in the eight- and nine-spots for the Wildcats and combined to go six-for-six with two walks.
Makayla Brooks had three singles and scored four runs. Her sister Shayla had a double and two singles and scored twice.
Marmaton Valley started the scoring early when sophomore Isabelle Bigelow led off the bottom of the first with a walk and pitcher Karlie Stephens followed up with a single. With that, Marmaton Valley took a 1-0 lead.
They added four more in the second with Stephens, Makayla Brooks, Shayla Brooks and Shailee Woods all scoring runs.
Uniontown answered back in the third inning when they posted three runs .
Marmaton Valley clawed out two runs in its half of the third. Makayla Brooks and Paige Becker each scored.
In the fourth inning, Uniontown scored two more runs off of Stephens, but the freshman hung in there and maintained the lead at 7-5.
The Wildcats matched the Eagles with two runs of their own in the fourth and built the lead back up to 9-5.
The fifth inning was scoreless for both sides, but in the top of the sixth Uniontown tied it up with four runs.
Again, the lower part of the Wildcat lineup came through in the sixth. Junior Kyla Drake led off with a triple. After an out was recorded, Marmaton Valley reeled off five straight hits. Becker and the Brooks sisters started it off with the first three of those hits from the 7-8-9 spots in the lineup.
