High School Baseball and Softball: Marmaton Valley Wildcats
After getting swept by Southeast-Cherokee to start the season, both the Marmaton Valley baseball and softball teams rebounded on the road at Pleasanton.
The Lady Wildcats swept the Blu-Jays 15-0 and 23-5 and the baseball team split with Pleasanton falling 8-4 before getting a big 28-8 win.
The baseball team moves to 1-3 while the softball team evens out at 2-2.
The Marmaton Valley girls led 2-0 after the first inning of game one but a 12-run second inning and another run in the top of the third gave the Wildcats a 15-0 lead and ended the game on a run-rule.
Junior starter Karlie Stephens pitched a no-hitter in the three-inning game while recording seven strikeouts.
Sophomore Sarah Spillman (one hit) and Stephens (two hits) each drove in two runs.
The Wildcats stole seven bases, including four for senior Isabelle Bigelow.
In game two, the Lady Jays took a short 3-2 advantage after the first inning before Marmaton Valley rattled off 15 runs in the top of second. Pleasanton plated two more runs in the bottom of frame but the Lady Wildcats drove in six more runs in the top of the third before the game ended a half-a-inning later thanks to the run-rule.
Stephens got the start and pitched the first inning, allowing two hits before Kayla Ard came in relief and pitched the final two innings allowing five runs (two earned) on two hits while striking out six batters for the win.
Junior Shailee Woods had three RBIs on two hits and senior catcher Trinitee Gutierrez scored two runs on two hits.
On the baseball side, the Wildcats came out struggling in game one.
The Wildcats fell behind in the first inning 2-1 and Pleasanton extended that lead to 5-1 after four innings. Marmaton Valley cut it to two with a couple runs in the top of fifth but in the bottom of the sixth, the Blu-Jays drove home three runs to push their lead to five with an inning to play.
Marmaton Valley scored a run in the top of the seventh but couldnt get any closer.
Caiden Elliot took the loss, surrendering five runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
Elliot also led the team offensively, scoring three runs on three hits. Lane Bahnsen recorded two hits and a walk and Trevor Wilson singled in a run.
Offensively our top fourguys showed up and that was it, head coach Derek Scharff said. We need to get production throughout the lineup. We left to many guys on base in key situations. It should have been a closer game then it was at the end.
