ARMA — Marmaton Valley High’s girls were downright stingy on defense Tuesday evening, limiting host Northeast-Arma to four combined field goals after intermission.
Problem was, the host Vikings were even better.
Northeast limited Marmaton Valley to three second-half field goals and did just enough offensively to emerge with a 37-29 victory.
The defeat drops Marmaton Valley to 9-8 on the season with a home game against Altoona-Midway set for Friday.
Tayven Sutton gave Marmaton Valley an early lift, scoring six points in a nip-and-tuck first quarter that saw Northeast leading 10-8 by the end of the period.
Janae Granere converted a pair of buckets for the Wildcats in the second period, but Northeast responded with a balanced scoring attack to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.
Marmaton Valley clamped down on defense in the third. Granere scored six more as the Wildcats pared the deficit to 26-23.
But Northeast committed just enough from the line down the stretch, hitting 7 of 18 free throws to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Marmaton Valley also scuffled with its free throws, shooting a collective 11 of 20 from the stripe. Northeast wound up hitting 12 of 27 charities.
Granere scored 12 and Sutton seven to lead Marmaton Valley.
Liberty Sigmon scored 15 to lead Northeast. Kenzie Jackson followed with nine.
Northeast also prevailed, 19-8, in a two-quarter junior varsity game. Kaitlyn Drake scored four, while Haylee Lanham and Braelyn Sutton scored two each.
