OSWEGO — Troubles out of the gate spelled trouble on the scoreboard for Marmaton Valley High Friday.

The Wildcats surrendered 28 points in the first and third quarters against host Oswego, falling 63-34 in their season opener.

Oswego’s explosive start brought to mind last year’s historic score-fest between the two schools, in which Marmaton Valley prevailed 106-98.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn’t keep pace this time around, trailing 28-12 after one period.

Marmaton Valley kept Oswego off the scoreboard in the second quarter, closing the gap to 28-20, but the Indians poured it on coming out of the break, extending its lead to 56-26 by the end of the period.

Sophomore quarterback Brayden Lawson paced the Wildcat offense, rushing for 97 yards on 17 carries, including a touchdown, and completing 9 of 18 passes for 88 yards. Sophomore Jaedon Granere rushed for 44 yards and pulled in two receptions for 37 yards.

Also contributing to the balanced attack were freshman Brevyn Campbell, who rushed for 32 yards on six carries, senior Evan Kent, who rushed for 27 yards on eight carries, freshman Tyler Lord, who had three catches for 12 yards, and freshman Todd Stevenson, who had one carry for 11 yards.

As a team, the Wildcats rushed for 215 yards.

Granere had 197 yards on kickoff returns.

Defensively, Lord racked up eight tackles, while Granere, Dylan Drake, Campbell and Daniel Fewins all had four stops apiece.

Oswego churned out 259 yards on the ground, led by Jake Hutchinson’s 106-yard effort. Hunter Kelly followed with 94 yards rushing.

Marmaton Valley looks to rebound at home Friday against Yates Center.

ELSEWHERE, Southern Coffey County’s introduction into six-man football was a tough one. The Titans fell at home to Waverly 48-0.

Southern Coffey County returns to action Friday at home against Lost Springs.
