After opening the season 0-4, the Marmaton Valley Wildcats are now 5-4 after sweeping Jayhawk-Linn 13-6, 22-12 in Thursday’s matchup.
In the opener, the Jayhawks held their own until Marmaton Valley plated seven unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory.
Junior pitcher Tyler Lord had a team-leading three RBIs followed by junior outfielder Todd Stevenson with two. Lord also tallied a team-leading seven strikeouts over four innings. Senior Dominic Smith came on in relief for five strikeouts over three innings.
While the Wildcats played a little jazz on the mound in the finale as they featured four different pitchers, their bats remained just as potent as they were in the opener. A seven-run first inning and a pair of five-run innings in the sixth and seventh was all Marmaton Valley needed for the victory.
Smith complemented his team-leading four strikeouts with a team-leading five RBIs. Junior catcher Garrett Morrison drove in four runs, followed by junior second baseman Brevyn Campbell with two.
First pitches for Thursday’s Three Rivers Conference doubleheader against Uniontown are slated for 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.
