MORAN — The Marmaton Valley High Wildcats football team got its second win of the season in a blow out against the Altoona-Midway High Jets.
The Wildcats, 2-1, scorched the Jets 50-0, who were mercy ruled for the second week in a row.
The first offensive play of the game for the Wildcats was a false start penalty, but from then on, it was smooth sailing. The very next play, senior running back Daylen Houk took a handoff from quarterback Zack English 77 yards, putting the first points on the board for the Wildcats.
From there, the route was on. After a three and out by the Jets, senior Chase Dudley ran for a 38-yard touchdown. The Wildcats played stingy defense all night, holding the Jets to negative yardage in the game. The defensive put up eight pionts of their own. Houk and Carlos Becker met a Jets ball carrier in the endzone to give the Wildcats two points off of a safety, and junior Jimmy Frye recovered a Jets fumble in the endzone.
“Our defense was our strong point tonight,” said Kent Houk, Marmaton Valley head coach. “They came up and filled the hole everytime and they did their job.”
Add a 55-yard second quarter punt return by Zack English and a couple more rushing touchdowns and that was all she wrote for the Jets.
“Our linemen were actually firing offthe ball a lot better than we did the first game,” he said.
Next week, the Wildcats face the Marais Des Cygnes Valley High’s Trojans in Moran.
“They’re a pretty solid team so we’ll get a test there,” Kent Houk said.
