HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s boys had troubles containing Burlington High’s fast-paced offense Friday.
The Wildcats scored 25 points by the end of the first quarter of a 71-47 win.
The loss drops Humboldt’s record to 5-9.
“We knew we’d have troubles if we couldn’t slow down their transition, and that’s what happened,” Humboldt head coach David Taylor said.
The Wildcats took an early 25-13 lead. Humboldt stayed within 36-24 at the break.
The Cubs later crept within 10, “but we had three possessions in a row where we didn’t do much,” Taylor said. “They threw a press at us, and it forced us into the turnovers at inopportune times. Burlington is solid. They did some good things.”
Burlington outscored Humboldt 18-11 in the third quarter to lead 54-35 and closed the game with a 17-12 run.
Noah Thornburgh again paced the Cubs with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Tanner McNutt scored 10 points. Derrik McCall, who was crowned homecoming king earlier in the evening, dished out five assists.
Blake Thomsen poured in 29 points to lead the Wildcats. Dustin Bluma added 11 and Brooks Boyce 10.
Burlington also won the junior varsity contest 63-36. Nathan Whitcomb scored nine to lead Humboldt. Burlington also captured the C team affair 46-28. Alex Murrow scored 10 to lead the Cubs.
Burlington High’s girls defeated the Humboldt Lady Cubs 69-6. There was no report on the game called in to the Register.
Humboldt travels to Caney Valley Tuesday.
