MOUND CITY — Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat squads had a rough start to Three Rivers League play Tuesday night.
On the road against Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawk teams, Marmaton Valley did not fare well. The Jayhawk girls rolled to a 53-17 win over the Wildcat girls. The Wildcat boys staged a fourth-quarter rally that came up short, 52-47.
Jayhawk-Linn’s girls powered to a 22-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The Wildcats were down 50-14 after three quarters.
Kaitlin Ensminger and Kailey Boyd each scored eight points for Marmaton Valley. The Wildcats were 4 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Emma Hargrove tossed in 22 points for Jayhawk-Linn. Baylea White added 16.
In the boys’ game, the two teams were knotted 10-10 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The Jayhawks got the edge with a 13-8 surge in the second quarter.
Marmaton Valley fell behind 39-26 as the teams headed into the fourth quarter. Jayhawk-Linn held off the charge by the Wildcats, 21-13, in the fourth by hitting 7 of 10 free throws.
Zach Louk led the Wildcats with 12 points, Cole Becker and Jimmy Frye each added 10 points.
Jake Rowe fired in 19 points for the Jayhawks. Austin Coleman chipped in with 17.
Marmaton Valley’s girls go into Christmas break at 0-1 in TRL play and 0-5 overall. The MVHS boys are 0-1 and 2-3.
The Wildcat teams host Frontenac on Jan. 3 to open the second half of the season.
