MOUND CITY — Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat teams had a tough road trip Thursday in Three Rivers League action.
The Wildcat baseball team dropped two decisions — 10-7 and 6-5 — to host Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks. That puts the Wildcats’ TRL record at 4-4 and overall mark at 7-8.
Marmaton Valley’s softball team fell 12-0 in five innings and 15-4 in five innings to the Jayhawk girls.
“Not much happened (for us in the first game). They had glove magnets,” said Brenda Mills, Wildcat softball head coach, referring to a no-hit, shutout in the opener.
Kaitlin Ensminger pitched the first game for Marmaton Valley. She gave up eight hits, issued seven walks and had one strikeout.
Tabitha Ford hit two singles for the Wildcats in the second game. Marmaton Valley scored a run in the first inning and three in the third.
Hitting a single each were Kayla Beth, Kacie Shadden, MaRyiah Cavender and Jocelyn Miller.
Kailey Boyd took the pitching loss. She worked three innings and was charged with 11 runs on five hits and seven walks. Ensminger pitched in relief and allowed four runs on one hit and two walks.
Marmaton Valley’s baseball team held a 5-2 lead after four innings. The Wildcats were up 7-4 when the bottom fell out. Jayhawk-Linn scored six runs to take the lead.
It ended up 10-7 with the Wildcats on the short end. Jimmy Frye pitched a complete game in a losing effort, giving up eight hits, walking two and striking out two.
Sage Hall, Taylor Lhuilier, Cole Becker and Gage Stewart each had two singles. Hitting a single apiece were Derrick Car, Frye, Daylen Houk, Austin Harrison and Ryan Smith.
In the second game, the Wildcats trailed 4-0 after two innings then scored three runs in the fifth to close the gap to one. Marmaton Valley took the lead with two runs in the seventh.
Up 5-4, the Wildcats couldn’t stop the Jayhawks from rallying. The Jayhawks scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win 6-5.
Becker started on the mound for the Cats and went five innings, charged with four runs on three hits and five walks with three strikeouts. Carr pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk.
Becker had two doubles and Frye hit a double and a single. Hall, Harrison and Stewart each had two singles. Lhuilier and Houk had a base hit apiece.
