EUREKA — Yates Center High’s volleyball team ended the regular season on a tough note, against a pair of tough opponents.

The Wildcats traveled to Eureka for a triangular competition Tuesday, along with Eureka.

Yates Center fell in both matches, falling to Neodesha, 25-19 and 25-23, and to Eureka, 25-7 and 25-10.

Of note, both Eureka (32-1) and Neodesha (26-9) are among the top-rated Class 3A teams in the state.

The losses put Yates Center’s final regular season record at 18-10.

The Wildcats are in Lyndon Saturday for the Class 2A Substate Tournament.

Yates Center finished in fifth in the Lyndon Substate standings, and thus would hold the fifth seed, but tournament pairings had yet to be announced at press time.

MEANWHILE, Marmaton Valley’s volleyball team ended the regular season on a dour note, dropping both of its matches at Marais Des Cygnes Valley.

The Wildcats fell to Northeast, 25-10 and 27-25, and to  host MDCV, 25-9 and 25-20.

The setbacks leave MV in fourth place, and thus the likely fourth seed at Marmaton Valley’s Class 1A-I Substate Tournament Saturday.

Marmaton Valley (23-13), is one of five teams with a winning record headed into Saturday’s tournament, which will be held in Moran. St. Paul (27-4) is the top team in the standings followed by Burlingame (23-7), Madison/Hamilton (20-11), the host Wildcats and Crest (18-16).

The state tournaments for both Class 2A and Class 1A-I will be in Dodge City Oct. 29 and 30.
